Today Singapore is
a vibrant melting pot of ideas, culture and people. The
population of Singapore consists mainly of Chinese, Malay,
Indians and a minority of other races. This tour takes you on an
exploration of the 3 main different cultures of our multi racial
Singapore lifestyle.
Our tour begins with a visit to Chinatown, where we stop to
visit a tea house. Tea drinking, according to Chinese belief, is
linked with health and is able to banish fatigue, stimulate
mental powers and raise energy levels. In the early days, tea
was mainly served to visiting guests at meals. We then take a
short stroll around and observe the Chinese businessman selling
his merchandise that ranges from traditional Chinese medicine,
ornaments to a variety
of Chinese foodstuffs. Check out paper cars, houses, hand phones
and even money- all these are part of the Chinese funeral
rituals. |

One next stop,
Waterloo Street, brings together a blend of 2 religious
cultures, showing an example of our racial harmony. Here, we
stop and visit the well known Chinese Kwan Imm Temple and Hindu
Temple-Sri Krishna Temple. These are places where you can
observe devotees worshipping at the temples. And if you believe
in fortune telling, have your fortune read here by
fortunetellers casually located outside the temple for a minimal
fee.

We then proceed to
Kampong Glam, to understand more about the Muslim culture. A
visit to Arab Street allows us to see the magnificent Sultan
Mosque, a landmark not to be missed. Built in 1928, the mosque
is one of the most impressive religious buildings in Singapore.
You can also take a short stroll past some of the shops selling
traditional Arab-Muslim food stuffs and see Arab merchants
selling their fine delicate silks and other varieties of
merchandise.
We move on to
Little India, the heartland of the Indian community and witness
a cacophony of colors, sounds and scents. Walk through the
streets and experience the pungent smell of spices and incense.
For our final stop, we sample the famous "roti prata". A crispy
crusty South Indian pancake served with curry gravy-Singapore's
version of the famous Italian pizza!
