Peranakan is a
Malay term which means 'locally born'. Peranakans are the descendants of
the early Chinese community who settled in the Malay Archipelago from
the 17th century and inter-married with the locals in the area.
The Peranakan culture is a rich blend of the Chinese and Malay cultures
with some influence from the Portuguese, Dutch, British, Thai and
Indonesia cultures as well. What has evolved over time, is a community
of people who observe Chinese festivals and traditional but show s
strong Malay influence in their food, language and dressing.
Our tour begins with a visit to the Asian Civilization Museum at
Armenian Street where it houses one of the finest collections of
Peranakan exhibits in South East Asia. Next, we proceed to Katong
to view the architecture and style of a typical Peranakan house. We then
stop at Kim Choo Kueh Chang to see nonya chang (rice dumplings)
demonstration where you can have a go at trying to pack and tie a chang!
This stop is famous for its homemade "ba-chang" and other local
snacks. Situated just next door, we stop at a Rumah BeBe. Combining arts
and crafts, fashion and cuisine, Rumah BeBe is a showcase of many
aspects of living Peranakan culture and heritage. This stop also offers
visitors beading demonstrations. Next, we proceed to Katong Antique
House, our final stop. It is filled with every type of traditional
Peranakan costume s, crockery and furniture. Meet Mr. Peter Wee, a
fourth generation Baba Peranakan who will regale you stories of his
heritage over a cup of coffee and some local baba snacks.
An opportunity to join the locals in a cooking demonstration class is
subject to space availability. (Not compulsory)
